Melissa’s Skirt to Capelet Reader ReFash

A Sustainable Scrubby Solution

I’ve been scouring the racks at my favorite thrift stores for a nice warm cape. Since I sometimes wear items with belled sleeves, they don’t always fit very well into my coat sleeves. A cape is a perfect solution!

Sadly, I have had absolutely no luck in finding one. But it looks like my luck has changed, thanks to Melissa over at !

Yes! Yes! Yes!
Yes! Yes! Yes!

I bought this skirt because I loved the plaid and the soft wool fabric.  This size 16 skirt had quite a few seams in it, which I usually avoid, but those seams create the flairs you see in the skirt, which was another reason I fell for the skirt.  Don’t ask me why, but I immediately thought “capelet” when I spotted this skirt.  This skirt only cost me $5.

I don’t know about you, but I always find scads (yes SCADS) of warm wool skirts that I don’t want. This refashion opens an entirely new world of possibilities for me, and I hope it excites you too!

You can check out . Be sure to take a look at her other lovely refashions as well. :)

  1. Love love love refashions… your own as well as others. Skirt to capelet…genius. Please check the link to Melissa’s tutorial… it actually takes you to your own 1 dress 3 ways fake vest post. Here’s Melissa’s post .

  2. Link is working now and I’m IMPRESSED!! She did a fantastic job – reading her full post showed that there was more work involved than I first thought. Nicely done! I’ve used larger-sized skirts that have lots of fabric for other items (napkins, scarves, etc.), but may have to give this a try. Thanks for sharing this! :)

  3. THIS. THIS. THIS. Simply brilliant and might be the tipping point to make me lean towards learning how to sew. Cuz I luvs me a capelet!

  4. You are so clever! Love to look up your methods! My mum used to make me little tunics when a child out of my fathers serge pants! My skills have only run to dresses from patterns and lots of happy pants … Pattern cut from another pair I had!
Have bought new sewing machine! At present have only sewn straight forward things but you inspire me!
